Songs Revisited

In the course of our lives, there are certain movies, sports moments that define our generation and deeply affect us emotionally or inspire us. Songs are no exception. Whether it be a ballad like Every Rose Has it's Thorn or songs with a message, We are the World, there are certain songs that leave an everlasting affect on us.Sometimes though, it doesn't happen right away for a song to catch on and could take years even decades for audiences to re-discover it.

The song I want to use as an example is the now immortal, Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. Originally released in 1981, it was not considered a big hit when it was first released. It was used as an inspirational anthem for the 2005 Chicago White Sox, 2008-09 Dodgers and the 2010 SF Giants. It is also used for all home Detroit Red Wings games given the opening lyrics (born and raised in South Detroit).

Recently it made its way back into the mainstream with the pilot episode of Glee which sparked millions of iTunes downloads and re-introduced the song to a new generation. It was also featured as the closing song in the Broadway show, Rock of Ages, which is now a major motion picture. Now, this is not the 1st time we've seen a song get re-introduced to a new generation. We saw this with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody  in the 1992 film Wayne's World and the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody in the 1990 film Ghost.

So what is it that makes a song we've had in our collection for years all of a sudden become relevant in our lives again? Is it because it's being used in our new favorite tv show or favorite scene in a movie? The answer will not be the same for everyone. Maybe there is no answer at all. As a fun Top 5, I was thinking of what my Top 5 songs used in movies are. Now the criteria has to be though that the song could not have been written for the movie because that would be cheating :) So in no particular order:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody - Wayne's World
2. Then He Kisses Me - Goodfellas
3. You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin - Top Gun
4. As Time Goes By - Casablanca
5. Stuck in the Middle with You - Reservoir Dogs

I would love to see comments on what your Top 5 are!

Hiatus is over!

It's been quite awhile since my last post and no I have not been in hibernation. Been pretty busy moving from one city to another and just trying to get projects and priorities together but enough of the boring stuff, I'm back and not going anywhere.

So what's the latest? Well, Summer movies are in effect and we're seeing Universal struggle again with Battleship and Snow White not able to hold the audiences at the theatres. The Avengers shocked everyone and is still bringing in the $$$ and Men in Black III confirmed that Will Smith can still open a movie.

The anticipation that is Promethus is out now but still waiting to see if it lives up to the hype. Looking forward to Rock of Ages and Brave and I just bought my tickets for the Midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises at the Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, CA. I'm tempted to watch the marathon of Batman Begins and Dark Knight but not quite there yet.

Great endings to some beloved TV shows (House, Desperate Housewives) and the return of some of my summer favs (Suits, Rookie Blue and True Blood).

As a long time Angeleno, congrats to the L.A. Kings for winning their 1st Stanley Cup!! and to my beloved Dodgers for still having the best record in MLB.

I think here is a good place to stop until next time.

Must See January 2012 TV

One of the cool things about January (besides making new resolutions) is getting to see the return of some really great TV shows and also the mid-season premiere of new shows hoping to last longer than the Playboy Club did. As for myself, I can't wait for the following:

Returning
Jan. 17 (FX) : Justified - Season 3 promos haven't shown much of what to expect but if it's anything like Season 2 was, we're in for good time.
Jan. 17 (TNT) : SouthLAnd - Seems so long ago that TNT saved this gritty cop show which is one of my personal faves and with the addition of Lucy Liu, I can't wait to see what these guys will come up with next.

New
Jan. 16 (FOX) : Alcatraz - I gotta admit I am intrigued by the premise and with a cast that features Sam Neill and Jorge Garcia, this looks like another possible winner from J.J. Abrams.
Jan. 12 (CBS) : ROB! - It's been awhile since Rob Schneider has been on the scene but this new sitcom also starring Cheech Marin could have potential. Having a lead-in like Big Bang Theory should help establishing an audience.
Jan. 12 (FOX) : The Finder - Bones Spin-off with Michael Clarke Duncan. Let's hope it finds an audience. Yeah, I went there.
Jan. 29 (HBO) : Luck - Having already seen the preview episode of the Michael Mann produced drama starring Dustin Hoffman, I can't wait for this show to make its debut at the end of the month.

I know there are a bunch of other shows premiering this month, but my DVR can't handle all of them. I still have to catch up on my Hawaii Five-O and Person of Interest.

Top 5 Movies of 2011

For this inaugural post of 2012, I thought it would be cool to post my Top 5 Films of 2011. These are in no particular order as to not offend anyone:

1 - Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: I know there is debate over which version is superior but one thing for sure, you can't beat the opening credits and Trent Reznor's update of The Immigrant Song.
2 - 50/50: One of the best written films of the year and overlooked ones as well.
3 - Moneyball: I may be biased because I love baseball, but this movie really was well done and you can't go wrong with Aaron Sorkin as the screenwriter.
4 - Hugo: While I'm not a huge fan of 3D, Scorsese really knocked this one out of the park and made me tell my friends that if you're get a chance to see it, do yourself a favor and spend the extra money.
5 - Bridesmaids: Not only did this film mark the triumphant return of Wilson Phillips but it made huge stars of Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. P.S. its a really funny movie too!

So that's my Top 5, did any of mine make your list?
